Wytham baronets

A Baronetcy of Wytham, in the County of Oxford, was a title created in the Baronetage of England on 21 July 1629 for Sir George Browne. The family was seated at [[Wytham Abbey]] in [[Wytham]], [[Oxfordshire]].

History

The Browne family of Wytham acquired the manor and estate of Wytham, which had previously been held by the Harcourt family. Sir George Browne, the first Baronet, was a prominent landowner in Oxfordshire during the early 17th century. The baronetcy was created by [[King Charles I]] as part of the system established to raise funds for the Crown.

The title passed through three generations of the Browne family:

  • Sir George Browne, 1st Baronet (created 1629; died 1633).
  • Sir John Browne, 2nd Baronet (son of the 1st Baronet; died 1659).
  • Sir George Browne, 3rd Baronet (son of the 2nd Baronet; died 1678).

Upon the death of the 3rd Baronet, Sir George Browne, in 1678 without male issue, the baronetcy became extinct. The Wytham estate subsequently passed through marriage to the Montagu family, Earls of Abingdon, through the marriage of the 3rd Baronet's sister, Bridget Browne, to [[James Montagu]].
