Wulkau

Wulkau is a village and a former independent municipality in Germany, located in the district of Stendal, within the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Since January 1, 2010, Wulkau has been incorporated as an Ortschaft (a designated locality or municipal part) into the town of Tangermünde.

  • Geography: Wulkau is situated on the left bank of the Elbe river, northeast of the town center of Tangermünde. The surrounding landscape is primarily characterized by agricultural land and the natural floodplains of the Elbe.
  • History: The history of Wulkau dates back centuries, with its first documented mentions appearing in medieval records. Over time, like many small settlements in the region, it maintained its rural character.
  • Administration: Prior to its incorporation, Wulkau was an autonomous municipality belonging to the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft (administrative community) Tangermünde. As part of a broader municipal reform in Saxony-Anhalt aimed at consolidating smaller communities, Wulkau lost its independent status and became a constituent part of Tangermünde. It now operates with a local council and a local mayor (Ortsbürgermeister) responsible for local affairs within the larger municipal structure of Tangermünde.
