World Youth Day 2008 was an international Catholic youth gathering convened by the Vatican and hosted by the Archdiocese of Sydney, Australia. The event took place from 15 to 20 July 2008 and was the 24th World Youth Day (WYD) since its inception by Pope John Paul II in 1985.

The official theme, taken from the Gospel of Mark 10:45, was Ego sum servus Domini – “I am the servant of the Lord.”
Papal Participation
Pope Benedict XVI presided over the event and made a pastoral visit to Australia, arriving on 19 July and celebrating the concluding Mass on 20 July.
Venue and Schedule
- Opening Mass: 15 July, Sydney Opera House.
- Catechetical and cultural events: Conducted throughout the week in various Sydney venues, including the Australian Museum, the University of Sydney, and several parish churches.
- Final Mass and Closing Ceremony: 20 July, Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), attended by Pope Benedict XVI and an estimated 250,000 participants in the stadium.
Attendance
Official figures reported approximately 400,000 young pilgrims from more than 165 countries, with additional tens of thousands of local participants and volunteers. The overall footfall for the week, including all ancillary events, exceeded 500,000 individuals.
Organization
The event was organized jointly by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life (formerly the Pontifical Council for the Laity), the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, and the Archdiocese of Sydney. A local organizing committee coordinated logistics, security (in cooperation with Australian federal and state authorities), accommodation, and transportation.

Legacy
World Youth Day 2008 is noted for being the first WYD held in the Southern Hemisphere since 1995 (the event in 1995 was in the Philippines). The event contributed to increased youth participation in the Catholic Church in Australia and fostered a network of international youth ministry collaborations. Infrastructure improvements made for the event, notably upgrades to the Sydney Cricket Ground and enhancements to public transport services in the central business district, remained in use after the gathering.
