World Vision Uganda (WVU) is the national branch of World Vision International, a global Christian humanitarian organization. Established in the early 1990s, WVU operates as a non‑governmental, non‑profit organization registered under Ugandan law, with its headquarters in Kampala.
Mandate and Scope
WVU’s mission is to improve the well‑being of children, families, and communities in Uganda through long‑term development, emergency relief, and advocacy. Its programmes focus on several sectors, including:
- Child Sponsorship and Protection – facilitating child sponsorship schemes and implementing measures to prevent child labor, trafficking, and exploitation.
- Education – constructing schools, providing learning materials, and supporting teacher training to increase access to quality education.
- Health and Nutrition – delivering community health services, vaccination campaigns, nutrition supplementation, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions.
- Livelihoods and Economic Development – promoting sustainable agriculture, micro‑enterprise, and income‑generating activities to reduce poverty.
- Emergency Response – providing humanitarian assistance during crises such as floods, droughts, and displacement of populations, including refugees from neighboring countries.
- Advocacy and Policy Influence – engaging with the Ugandan government and international bodies to shape policies related to child rights, health, education, and disaster risk reduction.
Funding and Partnerships
WVU’s activities are financed through a combination of private donations (including child sponsorship contributions), grants from bilateral and multilateral donors, corporate partnerships, and fundraising events. The organization collaborates with local NGOs, community‑based groups, and government ministries—particularly the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, the Ministry of Education and Sports, and the Ministry of Health.
Governance
The organisation is overseen by a Board of Directors that includes Ugandan and international members. Operational leadership is provided by a Country Director, who reports to the regional office of World Vision International for East Africa. WVU adheres to World Vision International’s global policies on governance, financial accountability, and child protection.
Key Achievements
Since its inception, WVU has reported reaching millions of beneficiaries across the country. Notable programmes include:
- Implementation of the “Safe Water for Life” initiative, which installed thousands of functional boreholes and protected springs in rural districts.
- Support for refugee-hosting communities in West Nile and the Northern Region, delivering education and psychosocial services to displaced children.
- Participation in national vaccination campaigns, contributing to the reduction of polio and measles cases among under‑five children.
Challenges
WVU operates within a complex environment characterized by recurring natural disasters, fluctuating donor funding, and occasional security concerns in certain regions.
