Wolcott Mill Metropark is a regional park located in Ray Township, Michigan, United States. It is one of 13 parks administered by the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA), commonly known as the Huron-Clinton Metroparks system. The park encompasses approximately 2,625 acres along the North Branch of the Clinton River.
History The park's namesake, Wolcott Mill, is a historic gristmill and feed mill originally constructed in 1847 by the Arad Freeman family. The mill was later purchased and operated by the Wolcott family for several generations. The property became part of the Metroparks system in the 20th century to preserve the historic structures and provide recreational access to the river corridor. The mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Features and Facilities
- Historic Center: The park preserves the historic Wolcott Mill, a barn museum, and a farm center interpreting 1920s-era agriculture. The mill operates seasonally for demonstrations of grain grinding.
- Farm Center: A working educational farm featuring livestock (including dairy cows, sheep, chickens, and horses), a greenhouse, and gardens. It offers interpretive programs on agricultural history and modern farming practices.
- Golf Course: The park includes an 18-hole regulation golf course (Wolcott Mill Metropark Golf Course) designed by Jerry Matthews, opened in the late 20th century.
- Camp Rotary: A group camping facility available by reservation for organized youth and adult groups.
- Trails: The park offers a network of trails for hiking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. It connects to the North Branch Trail system.
- Nature Preserve: Significant portions of the park are designated as natural areas, including floodplain forests, wetlands, and meadows managed for biodiversity and wildlife habitat.
Ecology The park protects a segment of the North Branch of the Clinton River. Its diverse habitats support a variety of flora and fauna typical of the Great Lakes region, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, numerous migratory bird species, and native wildflowers. The Metroparks system conducts ecological management activities such as invasive species control and prescribed burns within the park boundaries.
Access and Administration The park is open daily, year-round. Vehicle entry requires a Metroparks pass (annual or daily), which grants access to all Huron-Clinton Metroparks. The park is managed by the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority, a regional special district encompassing Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston, and Washtenaw counties.
