Winsted is a city located in McLeod County, Minnesota, United States. Situated in the central part of the state, it serves as a regional center for a largely agricultural area while also supporting various light industries and small businesses.
Geography
Winsted is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) west of Minneapolis, the state's largest city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.18 square miles (5.65 km²), of which 2.05 square miles (5.31 km²) is land and 0.13 square miles (0.34 km²) is water. The city is bisected by the South Fork of the Crow River, which is part of the Mississippi River basin. U.S. Route 12, Minnesota State Highway 261, and County Road 9 are the main routes through the city.
History
The area around Winsted was initially settled in the mid-19th century. The city was officially platted in 1856 by Henry W. Wadsworth and incorporated as a village in 1887. The name "Winsted" is believed to have been chosen by early settlers, possibly inspired by Winsted, Connecticut, their former home. Its development was significantly aided by the construction of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway line through the community. For much of its history, Winsted's economy has been closely tied to agriculture, serving as a hub for local farmers.
