WinWinD was a Finnish wind turbine manufacturer headquartered in Espoo, Finland, that operated from 2000 to 2012. The company designed, manufactured, and supplied industrial-scale wind turbines with capacities of 1 MW and 3 MW.
Company History
WinWinD was founded in 2000 in Oulu, Finland. The company established production facilities in Hamina, Finland, and Vengal (near Chennai), India. In 2006, the Siva Group of India, led by businessman Chinnakannan Sivasankaran, acquired majority control of the company. In September 2008, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) invested €120 million in WinWinD, acquiring a 40% stake. The Finnish investment fund Suomen Teollisuussijoitus (Finnish Industry Investment) also held a stake in the company.
Operations and Products
WinWinD manufactured three primary turbine models:
- WWD-1 — a 1 MW wind turbine
- WWD-3 — a 3 MW wind turbine
- WinWinD3 — a 3 MW wind turbine model
The 3 MW turbine featured an innovative and compact medium-speed drive train, with a nacelle design similar to the Multibrid 5MW wind turbine developed by aerodyn Energiesysteme GmbH. The company's 3 MW turbine manufacturing facility at the Port of Hamina began operations in 2009, and its 1 MW turbines and blades were manufactured in Vengal, India, beginning in September 2009.
At its peak, WinWinD employed more than 800 people globally. In addition to Finland, WinWinD turbines were deployed and generating energy in Sweden, Estonia, France, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and India.
Subsidiary
WinWinD operated an Indian subsidiary, WinWinD Power Energy Private Limited (WPEPL), which was incorporated as a 100% subsidiary of WinWinD Oy. The subsidiary was established to serve wind power markets across the Asia-Pacific region.
Bankruptcy
The company ceased operations in 2012. WinWinD Oy was declared bankrupt in October 2013 after attempts to rehabilitate the business through restructuring proceedings failed. At the time of the bankruptcy, the company held assets in Finland, India, and elsewhere. The bankruptcy administrator handled the proceedings, which involved the company's Finnish, Indian, and other operations.
Related Entities
The name "WinWind" (without the capital "D") has also been used by other unrelated entities, including an EU-funded Horizon 2020 research project focused on increasing social acceptance of wind energy in "wind energy scarce regions," and an Indian wind energy project developer founded in 2017. These are distinct organizations with no corporate connection to WinWinD Oy.
