Wim van Eekelen is a Dutch former diplomat and politician associated with the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). He held several senior governmental positions in the late 20th century, most notably as State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defence, and later as a member of the Senate.
Early life and education
Wim van Eekelen was born on 6 June 1931 in The Hague, Netherlands. He pursued legal studies at a Dutch university, obtaining a degree in law before entering public service.
Diplomatic and political career
Early diplomatic service
After completing his education, van Eekelen embarked on a career in the Dutch diplomatic corps. He served in various capacities within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gaining experience in international relations and European affairs.
State Secretary for Foreign Affairs (1978–1981)
In 1978, van Eekelen was appointed State Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Dries van Agt. In this role, he was responsible for assisting the Foreign Minister in managing the Netherlands' foreign policy, particularly in areas concerning European integration and bilateral relations.
Minister of Defence (1981–1982)
Following the 1981 general election, van Eekelen was promoted to Minister of Defence, serving in the short‑lived Van Agt III cabinet. His tenure as defence minister coincided with a period of heightened Cold‑War tensions and domestic debate over defence spending and nuclear policy.
Ambassador to the European Communities (mid‑1980s)
After leaving the cabinet, van Eekelen returned to diplomatic work, serving as the Netherlands' ambassador to the European Communities (the predecessor of the European Union). In this capacity, he represented Dutch interests in European institutions and contributed to policy discussions on economic and political integration.
Senate (1991–1995)
From 1991 to 1995, van Eekelen was a member of the Senate (the upper house of the Dutch Parliament) for the VVD. During his term, he participated in legislative committees dealing with foreign affairs, defence, and European matters.
Later life
Following his parliamentary service, Wim van Eekelen retired from active politics but remained involved in advisory roles related to international affairs and European cooperation.
