Willis Kienholz

Willis O. Kienholz (October 21, 1875 – May 2, 1958) was an American football player and coach who was active in collegiate sports during the early 20th century.

Kienholz attended the University of Minnesota, where he played as an end and halfback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team from 1897 to 1899. Following his playing career, he transitioned into coaching, holding head coaching positions at several notable institutions.

In 1903, Kienholz served as the head football coach at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now known as North Carolina State University), where he led the team to a 4–4 record. He later moved to the University of Colorado Boulder, serving as the head coach for the 1905 season, during which the team achieved a record of 8–1. In 1908, he coached at Washington State College (now Washington State University), finishing the season with a 4–0–2 record. He also held a coaching position at Lombard College in Galesburg, Illinois.

Beyond his coaching career, Kienholz was involved in educational administration. He served as the director of vocational education for the Los Angeles City Schools for several years. He died in 1958 in California. His contributions are primarily recognized within the historical records of the athletic programs he served during the developmental years of American intercollegiate football.
