Willie Alexander (born June 18, 1956) is a former American football cornerback and kick returner who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Early Life and College Career
Alexander attended Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach, Florida. He went on to play college football at the University of Miami, where he excelled as a defensive back and return specialist. His collegiate performance earned him recognition as one of the top prospects in the nation, making him a highly anticipated player for the NFL Draft.Professional Career
Alexander was selected by the Minnesota Vikings as the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 1977 NFL Draft. He quickly established himself as a prominent player, primarily serving as a starting cornerback and an electrifying kick returner. His athleticism and speed allowed him to make significant contributions on both defense and special teams.In 1978, Alexander earned a Pro Bowl selection as a kick returner, a testament to his effectiveness in that role. He spent seven seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (1977–1983), accumulating multiple interceptions and significant return yardage during his tenure. He was a key component of the Vikings' defensive backfield throughout his time there. For his final professional season, Alexander joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1984 before retiring from the NFL.
