William Payne (cricketer)

William Payne (born 14 May 1866 in Kennington, London; died 23 June 1928 in Clapham, London), often known as Billy Payne, was an English first-class cricketer who played for Surrey County Cricket Club. A right-arm fast bowler and right-handed tail-end batsman, he was active in the late 19th century.

Payne made his first-class debut for Surrey in 1888. He was a regular member of the county side for several seasons, contributing significantly with his pace bowling. His career spanned from 1888 to 1898, during which he played 88 first-class matches.

As a bowler, Payne took 228 wickets at an average of approximately 22 runs per wicket, with his best bowling figures being 8 wickets for 36 runs. He was known for his ability to take wickets with the new ball. As a batsman, he was less prolific, scoring 706 runs with a highest score of 41 not out.

Beyond his county cricket career, Payne was also a prominent club cricketer, particularly renowned for his performances at The Oval. His death was reported in June 1928.
