William Hutchinson (footballer)

William Hutchinson (27 March 1893 – 1960) was an English professional footballer who played as an outside-right. His career spanned the period around World War I and the interwar years, most notably with Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday.

Early Life and Career Born in Hylton, Sunderland, Hutchinson began his footballing career with local club Sunderland West End before joining Sunderland AFC in 1913. His early career was significantly interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. During the war, he served with the Royal Engineers.

Club Career

  • Sunderland (1913–1920): After the war, Hutchinson returned to Sunderland. He made a total of 54 appearances for the club in the Football League, scoring 11 goals.
  • Sheffield Wednesday (1920–1927): In 1920, Hutchinson moved to Sheffield Wednesday, where he established himself as a key player. He played 203 Football League matches for Wednesday, scoring 24 goals. During his time at Hillsborough, he was part of the squad that achieved promotion from the Second Division in the 1925–26 season.
  • Darlington (1927–1928): Towards the end of his professional playing career, Hutchinson joined Darlington in 1927, making 18 appearances.
  • North Shields: Following his departure from Darlington, he took on a player-manager role at non-League club North Shields.

Playing Style Hutchinson was known for his contributions from the outside-right position, using his pace and crossing ability to support the attack.

Later Life William Hutchinson passed away in 1960.
