William Erskine (master of Charterhouse)

William Erskine (1658–1725) was a Scottish clergyman who served as Master of the Charterhouse in London from 1704 until his death.

Born in Scotland, Erskine was educated at the University of Edinburgh. He entered the ministry of the Church of Scotland but later conformed to the Church of England, moving to London where he gained preferment through the patronage of John Sharp, Archbishop of York. He served as a royal chaplain to Queen Anne.

In 1704, following the death of Thomas Burnet, Erskine was elected Master of the Charterhouse (formally the Hospital of King James in Charterhouse), a prominent almshouse and school founded by Thomas Sutton. His tenure lasted over two decades. During his mastership, he navigated the institution through the transition from the Stuart to the Hanoverian succession, swearing the oaths to George I in 1714 despite his earlier Jacobite sympathies.

Erskine published several sermons and theological tracts. He died in office on 20 July 1725 and was buried in the Chapel of the Charterhouse.
