William Contreras

William José Contreras (born December 21 1998) is a Venezuelan professional baseball catcher who plays for the Milwaukee Brewers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut on September 1 2020.

Early life and amateur career
Contreras was born in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. He attended Colegio de la Inmaculada in his hometown before signing with the Milwaukee Brewers as an international free agent in July 2015, receiving a signing bonus of $2.5 million.

Professional career

Minor leagues
After signing, Contreras began his professional career in 2016 with the Arizona League Brewers, where he posted a .217 batting average over 44 games. He progressed through the Brewers’ farm system, playing for the Helena Brewers (Rookie A), the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Class A), and the Carolina Mudcats (Class A‑Advanced) between 2017 and 2019. In 2019, while with the Carolina Mudcats, he hit .329 with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs over 118 games, earning a promotion to the Double‑A level with the Biloxi Shuckers later that season.

Major leagues
Contreras was called up to the major leagues on September 1 2020, appearing in 13 games that season and posting a .250 batting average with two home runs. He earned a spot on the Brewers’ Opening Day roster for the 2021 season and served as the primary catcher. In 2021, he logged 424 at‑bats, hitting .259 with 22 home runs and 70 RBIs, ranking among the league leaders in home runs by a catcher.

During the 2022 season, Contreras continued as the Brewers’ starting catcher, posting a .237/.310/.425 slash line with 15 home runs and 62 RBIs over 147 games. He was selected to the 2022 MLB All‑Star Game as a reserve catcher, marking his first All‑Star appearance.

International play
Contreras has represented Venezuela in international competition, including the 2023 World Baseball Classic, where he played as a catcher for the national team.
