Wiki-Watch (officially Arbeitsstelle Wiki-Watch im Studienzentrum für Medienrecht) is an academic project based at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany. Established in October 2010, the project functions as a media watchdog dedicated to monitoring the transparency and reliability of Wikipedia, with a primary focus on its German-language edition.
The initiative was co-founded by researchers and legal scholars, including Wolfgang Stock and Johannes Weberling. The project's stated goal is to provide users with tools to better evaluate the quality of information found on Wikipedia. To this end, Wiki-Watch developed the "Wiki-Watch-Check," an automated analysis tool that assigns a reliability score to individual articles based on various metrics, such as the number of unique editors, the frequency of updates, and the length of the entry.
In addition to technical analysis, Wiki-Watch monitors the editorial processes of the Wikipedia community. It aims to identify potential conflicts of interest, such as "hidden PR" or systematic manipulation by interest groups and public relations agencies. The project has conducted several surveys and published reports regarding the impact of Wikipedia on the media landscape and public opinion.
Throughout its existence, Wiki-Watch has been a subject of discussion within both the media and the Wikipedia community. While it positions itself as an instrument for greater accountability, some critics have questioned its methodologies and the neutrality of its founders.
