Wijdefjorden

Definition
Wijdefjorden is a fjord on the island of Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago (Norway). It is the longest fjord in Svalbard, extending approximately 108 km (67 mi) from the Arctic Ocean inland.

Overview
The fjord cuts north‑south through the central part of Spitsbergen, opening into the Arctic Ocean near the settlement of Barentsburg. Its western shore lies in the region known as Albert I Land, while its eastern shore is bordered by Andrée Land. The fjord’s interior is characterized by steep mountainous walls, numerous glaciers, and a rugged, largely uninhabited coastline. Seasonal sea ice frequently blocks navigation, especially in the inner reaches of the fjord.

Etymology / Origin
The name “Wijdefjorden” derives from the Dutch words wijd (wide) and fjorden (fjord), meaning “the wide fjord.” The designation was applied by Dutch whalers and explorers in the early 17th century, reflecting the fjord’s comparatively broad mouth. The spelling follows the Dutch orthographic tradition, although the name is now used in Norwegian and international cartography.
