Wiener Sport-Club (often abbreviated WSC) is a multi‑sport association based in the Döbling district of Vienna, Austria. Founded on 14 May 1883 as a rowing club, it expanded over the following decades to incorporate a wide range of athletic activities, including football, athletics, tennis, and swimming.
Football department
The football section, formally established in 1915, achieved its greatest success in the 1950s and early 1960s. Wiener Sport-Club won the Austrian Cup twice (1958 and 1961) and finished as runners‑up in the Austrian Bundesliga on three occasions (1958, 1959, 1960). The team qualified for European competition, reaching the quarter‑finals of the 1961–62 Inter‑Cities Fairs Cup, where it was eliminated by Barcelona. After a period of decline, the club has competed primarily in the lower tiers of Austrian football, currently playing in the Regionalliga Ost (third tier) as of the 2023–24 season.
Athletics department
WSC’s athletics division has been prominent in Austrian track and field. The club has produced multiple national champions and has been associated with notable athletes such as Franz Högler (sprinter) and Liese Prokop (heptathlete and later Austrian Minister of the Interior). The organization maintains a training facility at the historic Türkenschanze stadium, which also serves the football team.
