White Creek is a town in Washington County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the town had a population of 1,226 residents. White Creek is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area and lies along the eastern border of New York State, adjacent to the state of Vermont.
Geography
White Creek occupies an area of approximately 39.9 square miles (103.3 km²), of which 39.6 square miles (102.6 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²) is water. The town is situated in the southeastern part of Washington County and is traversed by the White Creek waterway, a tributary of the Hoosic River. The Hoosic River forms part of the eastern boundary with Vermont. New York State Route 22 and New York State Route 67 provide primary road access through the town.
History
The area that is now White Creek was originally inhabited by the Mohican and other Algonquian-speaking peoples. European settlement began in the mid‑18th century, with the first permanent white settlers arriving in the 1760s. White Creek was formally established as a distinct town on March 13, 1790, when it was partitioned from the neighboring Town of Hoosick. The town was named for the White Creek waterway that runs through it. Throughout the 19th century, the local economy was predominately agricultural, supplemented by small‑scale manufacturing such as gristmills and sawmills powered by the creek.
Demographics
According to the 2020 census, White Creek had 1,226 inhabitants, a slight decrease from the 2010 figure of 1,282. The racial composition was reported as 96.8 % White, 1.1 % African American, 0.5 % Native American, 0.4 % Asian, and 1.2 % of two or more races; Hispanic or Latino of any race comprised 1.6 % of the population. The median household income (2016‑2020 American Community Survey) was approximately $58,900, with about 9.4 % of residents living below the poverty line.
Government
White Creek operates under a town board form of government comprising a town supervisor and four council members. The town provides services such as road maintenance, land‑use planning, and fire protection through a volunteer fire department. Law‑enforcement services are provided by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Education
Public education for the town is administered by the White Creek Central School District, which operates the White Creek Central School serving students from kindergarten through grade 12. The district also offers a range of extracurricular activities, including athletics and arts programs.
