Definition
Whairepo Lagoon is a publicly accessible, artificial tidal lagoon situated on the waterfront of Wellington, New Zealand, adjacent to the national museum Te Papa Tongarewa.
Overview
The lagoon forms part of the Wellington waterfront redevelopment that commenced in the early 2000s. It was officially opened in 2005 and functions as a recreational space for walking, picnicking, kayaking, and community events. Water flows in and out with the harbor’s tidal movements, maintaining a shallow depth that is safe for casual water‑based activities. The site is landscaped with native vegetation, boardwalks, and public artworks, and it provides visual and physical connectivity between Te Papa, the harbour, and the surrounding urban precinct.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Whairepo” is derived from Māori, in which it translates to “ferry” or “to carry across.” The designation reflects the lagoon’s role as a crossing point and gathering place within the harbour environment.
