West Suffolk (county)

West Suffolk is a local government district in the county of Suffolk, England. It was established on 1 April 2019, as a result of the merger of the former districts of Forest Heath and St Edmundsbury. The district is governed by West Suffolk Council.

History The creation of West Suffolk followed a review of local government in Suffolk. The aim was to create a more efficient and resilient local authority by combining two existing districts. Both Forest Heath and St Edmundsbury had historically been distinct administrative areas within western Suffolk, each with its own heritage and local governance structures. The merger was approved by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and came into effect on April 1, 2019, coinciding with local elections for the new council.
