West Samos

West Samos (Greek: Δυτική Σάμος, Dytikí Sámos) is one of the two municipalities that constitute the island of Samos in the North Aegean region of Greece. The municipality was established under the 2011 Kallikratis reform, which reorganized local government structures throughout the country. Its administrative seat is the town of Karlovassi.

Geography
West Samos occupies the western portion of the island of Samos, covering an area of approximately 188 km² (72.6 sq mi). The terrain is characterized by a combination of coastal lowlands, rolling hills, and mountainous regions, including parts of the island’s central mountain range. The municipality borders the municipality of East Samos to the east and the Aegean Sea to the north, west, and south.

Demographics
According to the 2021 national census, West Samos had a resident population of around 14,500 inhabitants. The population is concentrated in several towns and villages, with Karlovassi being the most populous urban center. The demographic profile reflects typical patterns for Greek island communities, with an aging population and seasonal fluctuations due to tourism.

Administration
The municipal government is headed by a mayor elected for a four‑year term. The municipal council is composed of councilors representing various local districts. West Samos is part of the regional unit of Samos, which in turn belongs to the North Aegean periphery.

Economy
The economy of West Samos is diversified, with primary activities including agriculture (especially olive cultivation, viticulture, and fruit orchards), fishing, and tourism. The municipality’s coastline features several beaches and harbors that attract both domestic and international visitors during the summer months. Small‑scale manufacturing and services also contribute to the local economy.

Infrastructure
Transportation infrastructure includes a network of regional roads linking the municipal capital to other parts of the island, as well as to the main port of Vathy in East Samos. Public bus services operate within the municipality, and a regional airport located near the town of Samos serves the entire island. Utilities such as water, electricity, and telecommunications are managed by national and regional providers.

History
The territory now forming West Samos has been inhabited since antiquity, with archaeological sites indicating settlements from the Archaic and Classical periods of Greek history. Throughout the Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Greek periods, the area has maintained agricultural and maritime traditions. The formal delineation of West Samos as a separate municipality is a recent administrative development, reflecting contemporary governance reforms rather than a distinct historical polity.
