Wenxinia is a genus of bacteria within the family Rhodobacteraceae, order Rhodobacterales, class Alphaproteobacteria, phylum Pseudomonadota (formerly Proteobacteria), and domain Bacteria. The genus was formally described in 2007 by Ying et al.
Taxonomy
- Domain: Bacteria
- Phylum: Pseudomonadota
- Class: Alphaproteobacteria
- Order: Rhodobacterales
- Family: Rhodobacteraceae
- Genus: Wenxinia Ying et al. 2007
Type Species
- Wenxinia marina (the type species)
Recognized Species
- Wenxinia marina
- Wenxinia saemankumensis
Characteristics
Members of the genus are Gram‑negative, aerobic, and heterotrophic bacteria. The type species, W. marina, was isolated from marine sediment collected at the Xijiang oilfield in the South China Sea, China. Additional isolates have been obtained from other marine environments, indicating a habitat preference for marine sediments.
Etymology
The genus name Wenxinia honors the Chinese microbiologist Chen Wenxin for his contributions to bacterial systematics.
Ecological and Scientific Relevance
Species of Wenxinia belong to the Roseobacter clade, a group of Alphaproteobacteria that are abundant in coastal and open‑ocean waters and play roles in biogeochemical cycles, including carbon and sulfur transformations. Research on Wenxinia contributes to the broader understanding of microbial diversity in marine ecosystems and the functional capabilities of Roseobacter‑related taxa.
