Wayne Pivac (born 26 April 1962) is a New Zealand rugby union coach and former player. He is best known for his tenure as head coach of the Wales national rugby union team from 2019 to 2022 and, as of 2022, serves as head coach of the Auckland Rugby Union's senior team.
Early life and playing career
Pivac was born in Auckland, New Zealand. As a player, he occupied the centre position and represented Auckland at the senior provincial level during the 1980s. He also played for the New Zealand Colts (under‑21) side.
Coaching career

Early coaching – After retiring from playing, Pivac began coaching at club level in New Zealand, notably with the Ponsonby Rugby Club. He later served as an assistant coach for the Auckland provincial team and was appointed head coach of the New Zealand Development XV.

Tasman Rugby Union (2000–2011) – Pivac became head coach of the Tasman Makos in 2000. Under his guidance, the team progressed from the second‑tier National Provincial Championship (NPC) to the top division, achieving a historic Ranfurly Shield victory in 2008 and winning the ITM Cup Championship in 2010.

Chiefs (Super Rugby) – Assistant Coach (2012–2013) – He joined the Chiefs as an assistant coach, contributing to the franchise’s development and tactical planning.

Scarlets (2014–2019) – Pivac was appointed head coach of the Welsh regional side Scarlets. During his five‑year tenure, the Scarlets won the Pro12 (now United Rugby Championship) title in the 2016–17 season and consistently qualified for European competition.

Wales national team (2019–2022) – Following the departure of previous head coach Warren Gatland, Pivac was appointed head coach of Wales in December 2019. His tenure included a Six Nations Championship victory in 2021, a series win over South Africa in 2022, and participation in the 2022 Rugby World Cup. He was dismissed in December 2022 after a series of less‑successful results.
