Waycross Braves

The Waycross Braves were a minor league baseball team based in Waycross, Georgia, United States. The team primarily competed in the Class D Georgia–Florida League and served as an affiliate of the Boston Braves (later Milwaukee Braves) franchise.

History

  • Formation and First Stint (1948–1955): The Waycross Braves began play in 1948 as a Class D team within the Georgia–Florida League. They were established as an affiliate of the Boston Braves, joining a host of other minor league teams across the American South. During this initial period, the team competed for eight seasons, experiencing varying levels of success on the field. The team ceased operations after the 1955 season, reflecting the broader challenges faced by many smaller minor league teams and leagues in the mid-1950s.

  • Return and Final Years (1958–1959): After a two-year hiatus, the Waycross Braves returned to the Georgia–Florida League in 1958. By this time, the parent club had moved to Milwaukee, making the Waycross team an affiliate of the Milwaukee Braves. The team played for two more seasons before the Georgia–Florida League, along with the Waycross Braves franchise, permanently ceased operations after the 1959 season, marking the end of professional baseball in Waycross under the Braves name.
