Water treatment

Water treatment is the process of removing contaminants, impurities, and harmful microorganisms from raw water to make it safe and suitable for specific end uses, primarily for drinking, industrial applications, and medical purposes. The treatment process typically involves a series of physical, chemical, and biological methods designed to improve water quality according to regulatory standards.

Common stages in water treatment include coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Coagulation involves adding chemicals such as aluminum sulfate or ferric chloride to aggregate fine particles. Flocculation gently mixes the water to form larger settleable particles called flocs. Sedimentation allows these flocs to settle out under gravity. Filtration removes remaining suspended particles through media such as sand, gravel, or activated carbon. Disinfection, often achieved using chlorine, chloramine, ozone, or ultraviolet (UV) light, is applied to inactivate pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.

Additional advanced treatment processes may include reverse osmosis, membrane filtration, or activated carbon absorption, particularly when treating wastewater or seawater desalination. Industrial water treatment may involve demineralization or deionization to remove dissolved minerals.

Water treatment facilities operate under guidelines established by public health authorities, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and national environmental agencies, to ensure the safety and consistency of treated water. Properly treated water helps prevent waterborne diseases such as cholera, giardiasis, and dysentery.

The practice of water treatment has ancient roots, but modern systems originated in the 19th and 20th centuries with advances in microbiology and sanitation engineering. Today, water treatment is a critical component of public health infrastructure worldwide.
