Introduction
Warringah Council was a [[local government area]] (LGA) situated in the Northern Beaches region of [[Sydney]], [[New South Wales]], [[Australia]]. It operated from 1906 until its amalgamation in 2016.History
The Warringah Shire was officially proclaimed on 7 March 1906, emerging as one of the original 134 shires established following the enactment of the Local Government (Shires) Act 1905. Initially, its jurisdiction covered an extensive area that included what would later become the independent [[Manly Council]] and [[Pittwater Council]] areas. Manly had separated earlier to form its own municipality, and in 1993, the northern portion of Warringah Shire de-amalgamated to form the Pittwater Council.Over its century-long existence, Warringah Council played a crucial role in managing the significant urban development of the Northern Beaches, facilitating its transformation from a predominantly semi-rural landscape into a densely populated suburban region. Its administrative responsibilities encompassed a wide range of local government functions, including infrastructure maintenance (roads, stormwater), waste management, local environmental planning, development assessment, and the provision of various community facilities and services (parks, libraries, recreational programs).
Geography
At the time of its dissolution in 2016, Warringah Council covered an approximate area of 65 square kilometres (25 sq mi). Its geographical boundaries were defined by Pittwater Council to the north, Manly Council to the south, and the Ku-ring-gai Council and Hornsby Shire LGAs to the west. Its eastern boundary was the [[Pacific Ocean]], encompassing a significant stretch of coastline.Key suburbs and localities that fell under the jurisdiction of the former Warringah Council included [[Dee Why]], [[Brookvale]], [[Curl Curl]], [[Frenchs Forest]], [[Forestville]], [[Narrabeen]], [[Collaroy]], [[Manly Vale]], and parts of [[Davidson]].
Amalgamation
In 2016, as part of a wider program of [[New South Wales local government amalgamations]] initiated by the state government, Warringah Council was abolished. It was merged with the adjacent Manly Council and Pittwater Council to establish the new [[Northern Beaches Council]]. This amalgamation officially took effect on 12 May 2016, bringing to an end over a century of independent operation for Warringah Council.See Also
