Definition
Warnes is a town in the Santa Cruz Department of Bolivia. It serves as the administrative capital of the Ignacio Warnes Province and forms part of the greater metropolitan area of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
Overview
Located in the eastern lowlands of Bolivia, Warnes lies approximately 24 kilometres (15 mi) west of the departmental capital, Santa Cruz de la Sierra. According to the 2012 national census, the town had a population of 31,179 inhabitants. The settlement functions as a local commercial and agricultural hub and is integrated into the urban sprawl of the Santa Cruz metropolitan region. Transport links include the national highway Ruta 4, which connects Santa Cruz with Cochabamba, and the nearby El Trompillo Airport (IATA: SRZ), historically used for both civil and military aviation.
Etymology / Origin
The town is named after Colonel Ignacio Warnes (1772–1816), a prominent figure in the Bolivian War of Independence who led republican forces in the eastern plains. The use of his surname for the municipality reflects a common practice in Bolivia of commemorating national heroes through place names.
Characteristics
- Geography: Situated at an elevation of roughly 400 metres (1,300 ft) above sea level, Warnes lies within the tropical savanna climate zone (Köppen Aw), characterised by a pronounced wet season (October–April) and a dry season (May–September).
- Economy: The local economy is diversified, with agriculture (soybeans, corn, and tropical fruits) and livestock farming forming the primary sector. Small‑ and medium‑scale commerce, service industries, and light manufacturing have expanded as the metropolitan area of Santa Cruz extends outward.
- Infrastructure: In addition to the highway network, Warnes is served by basic utilities, educational institutions (including primary and secondary schools), and health facilities. The proximity to Santa Cruz’s larger infrastructure—including Viru Viru International Airport—provides broader connectivity.
- Demographics: The population is a mixture of mestizo, indigenous, and migrant groups, reflecting the broader demographic trends of the Santa Cruz department. Spanish is the dominant language, while several indigenous languages are present in the wider region.
