Warhol (crater)

Warhol is an impact crater on the planet Mercury. Its name was adopted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 2012, in honor of the American artist Andy Warhol (1928–1987), a leading figure of the Pop Art movement.

The crater is located in the Kuiper quadrangle of Mercury, at approximately 2°33′S 6°16′W, and has a diameter of about 91 kilometers (57 miles). It features a smooth floor formed from impact melt, stepped walls, and a central peak.

Warhol is notable for the abundance of "hollows" within it. Hollows are irregular, shallow, flat-floored depressions found on Mercury's surface, often with high albedo (brightness). The hollows in Warhol crater are among the most extensive and well-studied examples of this feature on Mercury, and they have been observed in high-resolution images captured by NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft. The crater also exhibits a distinct crater chain and a network of small hollows surrounding its central peak.

The formation and evolution of hollows on Mercury remain an active area of scientific research, as their exact origin is not yet fully understood.
