Definition
Walter Kingsford (30 March 1882 – 2 May 1958) was a British‑born actor who worked extensively in American stage, film, and television productions during the first half of the 20th century.
Overview
Born in London, England, Kingsford began his theatrical career on the British stage before relocating to the United States in the 1910s. He became a regular presence on Broadway, appearing in a variety of plays ranging from comedies to dramas. Transitioning to the screen in the silent‑film era, Kingsford signed with major studios such as Fox Film and later worked for Warner Bros. and other production houses. He is most recognized for his portrayals of authority figures—doctors, military officers, and judges—often cast in supporting roles that leveraged his dignified bearing and clear diction.
Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Kingsford appeared in numerous films, including The House of the Seven Gables (1940) and The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942). In the early 1950s, he made several television appearances, most notably as Dr. Gillespie in the Dr. Kildare television series, where he succeeded the earlier film portrayal of the character. Kingsford retired from acting in the mid‑1950s and died in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 76.
