Definition
Walter Elmer Pope (1869 – 1939) was an American lawyer, newspaper editor, poet, and state legislator from Texas. He is noted for his contributions to Texas journalism, his literary output, and his service in the Texas House of Representatives.
Overview
Born on May 5, 1869, in La Grange, Tennessee, Pope moved with his family to Texas during his youth, eventually settling in Weatherford, Parker County. He pursued legal studies, was admitted to the Texas bar in 1891, and established a law practice in Weatherford. Concurrently, Pope entered the field of journalism, acquiring and editing the Weatherford Democrat, a weekly newspaper that served Parker County and surrounding communities.
Pope’s literary interests led him to compose poetry, much of which was published in regional periodicals and anthologies. His verses often reflected the rural Texas landscape and contemporary social concerns. In addition to his journalistic and literary activities, Pope engaged in public service. He was elected as a Democrat to the Texas House of Representatives, representing Parker County for the 27th Legislature (1911‑1913). During his legislative tenure, he served on committees dealing with education, judicial affairs, and infrastructure, advocating for improvements in rural schools and road development.
After leaving the legislature, Pope continued his legal practice and editorial work. He remained an active member of civic organizations, including the Texas Bar Association and various literary societies. Walter Elmer Pope died on August 28, 1939, in Weatherford, Texas, and was interred at the City Cemetery there.
