Walt Weiskopf (born October 15, 1959) is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator. He is recognized for his work in big band, small ensemble, and wind ensemble settings, and has contributed extensively to jazz education in the United States.
Early life and education
Weiskopf was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. He began playing saxophone at a young age and pursued formal musical studies at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. He later completed a Master of Music in Jazz Studies at the same institution.
Professional career
Big band affiliations
- In 1984, Weiskopf joined the Woody Herman Orchestra, serving as the lead alto saxophonist and occasional soloist until the band's dissolution in 1987.
- He subsequently performed with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, and the Carla Bley Big Band, among others.
Small ensembles and solo work
- Weiskopf has led his own groups, releasing more than a dozen albums as a bandleader. Notable recordings include A Portrait of an American Jazzman (1991), Walt Weiskopf Quartet (1995), and The Wizards of the Subtle (2014).
