Waikato Hospital is a major public hospital located in Hamilton, New Zealand. It serves as the primary tertiary referral center for the Waikato region and provides specialized medical and surgical services for a broad catchment area across the central North Island.
The facility is operated by Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand), the national health organization established in 2022 following the disestablishment of the regional District Health Boards (DHBs). Prior to this restructuring, the hospital was managed by the Waikato District Health Board.
Situated on a large campus in the suburb of Melville, Waikato Hospital is one of the largest hospital complexes in New Zealand. It provides a comprehensive range of health services, including a Level 1 trauma center, emergency medicine, intensive care, and specialized units for cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, and pediatrics. It also houses the Waikato Regional Cancer Centre, which serves patients from the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Lakes districts.
Waikato Hospital functions as a significant clinical teaching and research institution. It is a clinical campus for the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and maintains a partnership with the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) for the training of nursing and allied health professionals.
