Wacaday

Definition
Wacaday is a British children's television series that aired on the TV‑am network during school‑holiday mornings from 21 October 1985 until the end of the franchise in 1992. The programme was presented primarily by Timmy Mallett and was broadcast live in a daily 25‑minute slot (8:50 – 9:25 a.m.).

Overview
Created as a spin‑off of the successful Saturday‑morning show Wide Awake Club, Wacaday occupied the school‑holiday morning slot previously held by the puppet host Roland Rat. The series ran for approximately six years, producing around 455 episodes over its lifetime. It was designed to entertain and engage children during the school break, featuring a mixture of games, cartoons, viewer interaction, and pre‑recorded reports from various countries.

Etymology / Origin
The title “Wacaday” derives from the initials “WAC”, standing for Wide Awake Club, the programme from which it was developed. The suffix “‑day” reflects its daily broadcast schedule during holiday periods.

Characteristics

  • Presentation and Hosts – Timmy Mallett served as the main presenter throughout the series. Michaela Strachan co‑presented during the summer holidays of 1987‑1989.
  • Format – The live studio show combined word‑association games (e.g., “Bonk’n’Boob”), the “Mallett’s Mallet” segment, and the “Drop Your Toast” gag where viewers’ names were announced in a manner intended to make them drop their toast.
  • Thematic Episodes – From 1987 onward each series (one per school holiday) was themed around a different country that Mallett had visited. Pre‑recorded reports introduced viewers to the country’s culture, customs and history in a humorous style, and studio sets were decorated accordingly.
  • Regular Features
    • Magic, Mallett’s pet cockatiel, featured in narrated adventure stories.
    • Phone‑in quizzes and gunge‑related competitions at the programme’s conclusion.
    • Short animated cartoons (e.g., Transformers, Galaxy High School, Batfink, Challenge of the GoBots, Dick Tracy).
  • Iconic Elements – The giant pink foam mallet “Pinky Punky” (introduced 1990) and the catchphrase “bleugh!” originated on Wacaday and became closely associated with Mallett’s on‑screen persona.
  • Production – Devised and produced by Nick Wilson, the show was recorded live from TV‑am’s studios. Adjustments to the “Mallet” game were made later in the series to discourage imitation of the head‑hitting routine by young viewers.
