WPRO-FM

WPRO-FM (92.3 MHz) is a commercial radio station licensed to Providence, Rhode Island, serving the Providence metropolitan area and much of Southern New England. Owned by Cumulus Media, the station broadcasts a Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) format, branded on-air as "92 PRO-FM." Its studios are located in East Providence, and its transmitter is situated on Neutaconkanut Hill in Johnston, Rhode Island.

History WPRO-FM first signed on the air in 1948, initially as a sister station to WPRO (AM) (630 kHz). For its early decades, WPRO-FM primarily simulcast the programming of its AM counterpart, which at the time featured a mix of news, talk, and popular music. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) began requiring FM stations to offer separate programming from their AM sister stations, WPRO-FM began to develop its own distinct identity.

In the mid-1970s, WPRO-FM fully transitioned to a Top 40/CHR format, a genre it has largely maintained ever since. This move proved highly successful, and "92 PRO-FM" quickly became a dominant force in the Southern New England radio market, establishing itself as the leading station for popular music among young demographics. Over the years, the station has been home to numerous local personalities and has consistently ranked among the top-rated stations in the Providence market.

Programming and Format WPRO-FM's programming consists of current hit music, primarily from the pop, R&B, and hip-hop genres. The station features a lineup of local disc jockeys throughout the day and often incorporates syndicated programming during overnight or weekend hours. Regular features include listener request segments, countdowns, and contests. The station also provides local news, weather, and traffic updates relevant to the Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts listening area.

Ownership WPRO-FM, along with WPRO (AM) and several other stations in the market, is owned and operated by Cumulus Media. Cumulus Media acquired the station as part of its larger portfolio of radio properties across the United States. Prior to Cumulus, the station was owned by Citadel Broadcasting, which Cumulus acquired in 2011.

WPRO-FM remains an influential station in the Southern New England radio landscape, continuing its long-standing tradition of broadcasting contemporary hit music.
