History The station first signed on April 15, 1940, as WTRY, originally broadcasting on 950 kHz with 1,000 watts before moving to 980 kHz on March 29, 1941, as part of the North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement. It was originally a CBS Radio Network affiliate owned by Troy Broadcasting Co. Over its early decades, the station aired a Top 40 format before transitioning to oldies in 1986.
The station underwent several ownership changes, passing through Kops-Monahan Communications (1965), Scott Broadcasting (1972), Merv Griffin Enterprises (1985), Capstar Broadcasting (1994), and AMFM Inc. (1999). Following the merger of AMFM and Clear Channel Communications (now iHeartMedia) in 2000, the station changed its call sign from WTRY to WOFX and flipped to a sports format, while the oldies format moved to WTRY-FM (98.3 FM). The call sign WOFX references "Fox," reflecting its affiliation with Fox Sports Radio.
Programming WOFX carries programming from Fox Sports Radio, including syndicated shows such as The Dan Patrick Show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, and The Jim Rome Show. The station also broadcasts play-by-play coverage of the New York Knicks, University at Albany college football and men's basketball, selected Syracuse University football and basketball games, and the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship.
The station has previously held broadcast rights for the New York Giants, New York Jets, and New York Mets, as well as Albany Devils (formerly Albany River Rats) hockey.
