W.C. and A.N. Miller is a real estate development and brokerage firm primarily operating in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Established in 1912 by brothers William C. Miller and Allison N. Miller, the company is recognized for its historical role in the residential expansion of Northwest Washington, D.C., and the adjacent Maryland suburbs during the early to mid-20th century.
The firm is best known for planning and constructing several high-end residential communities characterized by specific architectural standards and landscape design. In 1923, the company began developing Wesley Heights, followed by the development of Spring Valley in 1928. These neighborhoods were among the first master-planned communities in the United States to incorporate features such as coordinated landscaping and community-centric amenities. The company later expanded its portfolio to include other developments, such as the Sumner neighborhood in Bethesda, Maryland.
In addition to residential construction, W.C. and A.N. Miller provided commercial real estate services and property management. In 2007, the company's residential brokerage division was acquired by Long & Foster Real Estate, a major independent real estate company. The development and property management divisions continued to operate as the Miller Development Company. Historical records indicate that early developments by the firm, like many of its era, utilized restrictive covenants that were common in the mid-20th century real estate market before being struck down by subsequent legal rulings and civil rights legislation.
