Vytautas Žalakevičius

Vytautas Žalakevičius (April 30 1930 – June 12 1995) was a Lithuanian film director, screenwriter, and actor, recognized as one of the most prominent figures in the development of Soviet‑era Lithuanian cinema. His body of work includes feature films, documentaries, and television productions, many of which received awards at international film festivals.

Early Life and Education
Born in Šiauliai, Lithuania, Žalakevičius graduated from the Moscow State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in 1955, where he studied directing under prominent Soviet filmmakers.

Career
After completing his studies, Žalakevičius returned to Lithuania and began working at the Lithuanian Film Studio (Lietuvos kino studija). He quickly gained recognition for his narrative style and thematic focus on social and moral issues. Notable films include:

• The Chronicle of the Year 1970 (1960) – a short documentary that earned a prize at the Moscow International Film Festival.
• Nobody Wanted to Die (Niekas nenorėjo mirti, 1966) – a war drama that won the Best Director award at the 1967 Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight.
• The Devil's Bride (Velnias sužinojo, 1975) – a historical drama noted for its visual composition.
• The Summer of the Great Grandmother (Didžiosios močiutės vasara, 1979) – a family-oriented film that received the USSR State Prize.

In addition to directing, Žalakevičius contributed as a screenwriter and occasionally acted in supporting roles. He served as a professor at VGIK and mentored a generation of Baltic and Russian filmmakers.

Žalakevičius was the recipient of multiple Soviet and Lithuanian accolades, including:
