Vrbanj is a village located on the island of Hvar in Croatia. Administratively, it belongs to the town of Stari Grad within the Split-Dalmatia County.
Geography The settlement is situated in the central interior of Hvar, positioned on the northern slopes of the island's mountain range. It overlooks the Stari Grad Plain, a protected cultural landscape and UNESCO World Heritage site. Vrbanj is located approximately 5 kilometers from the coastal town of Stari Grad and is one of the largest inland settlements on the island.
History Vrbanj is recognized as one of the oldest inhabited settlements on Hvar, with archaeological evidence suggesting activity in the area dating back to prehistoric and Roman times. It is historically significant as the birthplace of Matija Ivanić, who led the Hvar Rebellion (1510–1514) against the Venetian Republic. The rebellion was a significant socio-political event in the history of the Dalmatian region.
Culture and Architecture The village is characterized by traditional Dalmatian stone architecture. A prominent landmark is the Parish Church of the Holy Spirit (Sveti Duh), which was originally constructed in the 15th century and underwent significant reconstruction in the 18th and 19th centuries. The settlement maintains traditional Mediterranean customs, including participation in the "Za Križen" (Following the Cross) procession, a centuries-old religious tradition on Hvar that is inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Economy The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, specifically viticulture and olive cultivation. The surrounding fertile land of the Stari Grad Plain supports the production of local wines and olive oil. In recent decades, small-scale tourism has become a supplementary economic activity, focusing on rural and heritage-based travel.
