Vouivria is a genus of brachiosaurid sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, approximately 150 million years ago, in what is now eastern France. The type species, Vouivria damparisensis, was described in 2017 based on fossil material recovered from the middle Oxfordian (Upper Jurassic) strata near the town of Damparis in the Franche-Comté region.
Etymology
The generic name Vouivria derives from the French exclamation “vouivre” (a mythical dragon or serpent in regional folklore) combined with the suffix “-ria,” forming a name that evokes the creature’s presumed large, serpentine form. The specific epithet damparisensis references the locality of Damparis where the holotype specimen was discovered.
Discovery and Holotype
Fossils attributed to Vouivria were first uncovered in the late 19th century during quarrying activities at the Damparis site. The material remained largely undescribed until a reassessment in the 2010s, which identified a partial skeleton including vertebrae, limb elements, and fragments of the pelvis. The holotype, designated as MNHN.F.33243, is housed in the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle (MNHN) in Paris. Additional referred material includes isolated teeth and caudal vertebrae from the same stratigraphic layer.
Geological Context
The fossils originate from the “Molasse du Jura” formation, specifically the middle Oxfordian stage of the Late Jurassic. This interval is characterized by floodplain deposits and overbank sediments, indicating a humid, subtropical environment with abundant vegetation.

Plant fossils from the same strata indicate the presence of conifers, cycads, and fern-like flora, providing ample forage for large herbivores such as Vouivria.

The description of Vouivria has contributed to a refined understanding of brachiosaurid diversity in Europe during the Late Jurassic, a period previously dominated by North American and African taxa.
