Strang proclaimed Voree to be a gathering place for his followers, establishing a church and publishing a newspaper, The Voree Herald. The settlement served as the headquarters of the Strangite church until Strang relocated his base to St. James, Michigan, in 1850.
Following the departure of the Strangite community, Voree continued as a rural locality. The post office that operated under the name Voree was established in 1856 and discontinued in 1900. The community never incorporated and has remained a small, unincorporated place.
