Authority
The species was originally described under the name Marginella abbreviata by C. B. Adams in 1850. It was later transferred to the genus Volvarina following revisions of marginellid taxonomy.
Description
Volvarina abbreviata is a small marine gastropod, typical of the genus Volvarina. Shells reach an adult length of approximately 5–8 mm. The shell is ovate‑elongate, smooth, and glossy, with a reduced spire and a relatively short, straight columella bearing a few modest folds. The coloration is variable but generally consists of a translucent white to pale cream base, often with faint brown or reddish axial streaks or spots. Detailed morphometric data and radular characteristics specific to this species are not extensively documented in the primary literature.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is known from the western Atlantic region, with confirmed records from the Caribbean Sea, particularly around the coasts of Florida, the Bahamas, and the Greater Antilles. It inhabits shallow marine environments, typically found in sandy substrates at depths ranging from the intertidal zone to about 30 m. Like other marginellids, it is presumed to be a nocturnal predator or scavenger, feeding on small invertebrates.
Ecology
Volvarina species are generally carnivorous, using a proboscis to capture prey. Specific ecological studies on V. abbreviata are lacking; therefore, its precise diet, reproductive behavior, and life cycle remain undocumented.
Conservation Status
There is no assessment of Volvarina abbreviata on the IUCN Red List. The species has not been reported as threatened, and no major conservation concerns have been recorded. However, habitat degradation in coastal regions could potentially impact local populations.

Notes on Information Availability
While the taxonomic placement and general characteristics of Volvarina abbreviata are documented in malacological literature, detailed species‑specific data (e.g., precise morphological measurements, comprehensive distribution maps, ecological studies) are limited. Consequently, many aspects of its biology remain insufficiently described in the scientific record.
