Volkmar Leimert

Volkmar Leimert (born October 19, 1956, in Wernigerode, East Germany) is a German politician belonging to the party Die Linke (The Left Party). He has served in various political capacities at the local, district, and state levels in Saxony-Anhalt, primarily known for his long tenure as mayor of Blankenburg (Harz), as district administrator of the Harz district, and as a member of the Landtag of Saxony-Anhalt.

Early Life and Education

Volkmar Leimert was born in Wernigerode, then part of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). After completing his Abitur, he pursued higher education, studying engineering economics.

Political Career

Leimert's political career began in the early post-reunification period of Germany, demonstrating a commitment to public service at various governmental levels.

Local and District Politics

From 1990 to 2007, Leimert served as the Mayor of Blankenburg (Harz), a town located in the district of Harz in Saxony-Anhalt. During his 17-year tenure, he oversaw significant developments and administrative changes in the municipality following German reunification. Following his service as mayor, he was elected District Administrator (Landrat) of the Harz district, a position he held from 2007 to 2014. In this role, he was responsible for the administration and development of the entire district.

State Parliament

In the 2016 Saxony-Anhalt state election, Leimert successfully ran for a seat in the Landtag of Saxony-Anhalt (state parliament) as a representative for Die Linke. He was re-elected in the 2021 state election, continuing to represent the Blankenburg-Quedlinburg constituency. Within the Landtag, he has focused on legislative issues pertaining to local government, finance, and regional development, often serving on relevant parliamentary committees.
