In heraldry, a vol is a charge consisting of a pair of wings displayed conjoined in base, that is, with the tips of the wings pointing upwards. It is considered a single charge, even though it is made up of two wings. The wings are typically depicted in a symmetrical fashion. The term "volant," referring to a bird in flight with outspread wings, is distinct and describes the posture of a bird rather than a specific charge. A demi-vol, as the name suggests, is a single wing, cut off at the shoulder. A "vol displayed and inverted" denotes a vol turned upside down. Vols can be tinctured in any of the heraldic colors or metals and may be charged with other symbols.
