Vladek Sheybal (born Władysław Sheybal; 21 December 1923 – 8 June 1978) was a Polish actor and director who worked extensively in British film, television, and theatre after emigrating from Poland in the post‑World War II period.
Early life and education
Sheybal was born in interwar Poland. He studied acting at the Państwowy Instytut Sztuki Teatralnej (State Institute of Theatrical Art) in Warsaw, completing his training shortly before the outbreak of World War II. During the war, he was involved in underground cultural activities and later served in the Polish Armed Forces in the West.
Career
After the war, Sheybal settled in the United Kingdom, where he became a regular character actor. His distinctively cultured voice and aristocratic bearing earned him roles portraying diplomats, military officers, and other authority figures. Notable appearances include:
- Film – He appeared in several high‑profile productions such as From Russia with Love (1963), The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (1965), and The Eagle Has Landed (1976).
- Television – He featured in series like The Prisoner (1967) and Doctor Who (1971).
- Theatre – Sheybal performed on the West End and with the Royal Shakespeare Company, undertaking both acting and directing duties.
In addition to acting, Sheybal directed a number of stage productions and contributed to the development of Polish cultural life in exile.
Personal life
Sheybal married twice and had one daughter. He remained active in the Polish émigré community, supporting cultural and charitable initiatives.
Death
Vladek Sheybal died of a heart attack on 8 June 1978 in London, England, at the age of 54. He was interred at Northwood Cemetery.
