Vityaz (MVD), often simply referred to as Vityaz (Russian: Витязь, meaning "Knight" or "Hero"), was a highly decorated and elite special purpose unit of the [[Internal Troops of Russia|Internal Troops]] (VV MVD), which were part of the [[Ministry of Internal Affairs (Russia)|Ministry of Internal Affairs]] (MVD) of the [[Russian Federation|Russia]]. It specialized in counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and other high-risk special operations, earning a reputation as one of Russia's foremost special forces.
History and Formation: The origins of Vityaz trace back to December 1978, within the Internal Troops of the MVD of the [[Soviet Union|USSR]]. A special company, the 9th Company of the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Regiment of the ODON (Separate Motorized Rifle Division for Special Purpose, also known as the Dzerzhinsky Division), was formed with the primary mission of providing security during the [[1980 Summer Olympics|1980 Moscow Olympics]] and countering potential terrorist threats.
Over the next decade, this unit expanded and evolved, reflecting the growing need for specialized counter-terrorist capabilities. In June 1989, it was officially designated as the 1st Special Purpose Detachment "Vityaz" (1-й отряд специального назначения "Витязь"). From its inception, Vityaz became known for its extremely demanding training, exceptional professionalism, and operational readiness. Its members were among the first in the MVD to adopt the maroon beret, which became an iconic symbol of elite special forces within the Internal Troops and later the wider Russian security forces.
Role and Operations: Vityaz was tasked with a broad spectrum of critical missions, including:
- Executing counter-terrorism operations, particularly in complex urban environments.
- Conducting hostage rescue missions.
- Disarming illegal armed groups and combating banditry.
- Engaging in direct action against organized criminal elements.
- Providing high-level security for strategic facilities and key personnel.
- Restoring and maintaining public order during major civil disturbances.
The unit gained significant combat experience during the tumultuous period of the late Soviet Union and the subsequent post-Soviet era. It was extensively deployed in conflicts and internal security operations, particularly throughout the [[North Caucasus]] region, including the [[First Chechen War]] and the [[Second Chechen War]].
Notable Engagements:
- August Coup (1991): Vityaz was deployed during the [[1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt|August Coup]] in Moscow, although its direct involvement in combat was limited.
- First Chechen War (1994-1996): The unit played an active role in numerous combat operations, including the intense fighting during the [[Battle of Grozny (1994–1995)|Battle of Grozny]].
- Second Chechen War (1999-2009): Vityaz continued to be a central force in counter-insurgency and special operations throughout the second conflict in Chechnya.
- Moscow Theater Hostage Crisis (2002): Vityaz was one of the primary special forces units involved in the dramatic assault on the Dubrovka Theater to rescue over 800 hostages held by Chechen terrorists. While the operation resulted in the neutralization of all terrorists, it tragically led to a high number of hostage fatalities, primarily due to the potent incapacitating gas used by the assault teams.
- Beslan School Siege (2004): Members of Vityaz were among the various special forces units deployed to Beslan during the horrific school siege. The unit suffered casualties during the chaotic and violent culmination of the crisis, demonstrating its willingness to engage in the most dangerous scenarios.
Legacy and Current Status: In 2008, as part of a significant restructuring of the Internal Troops' special forces apparatus, the 1st Special Purpose Detachment "Vityaz" was merged with the "Rus'" special purpose unit and other smaller specialized formations. This consolidation resulted in the creation of the 604th Red Banner Special Purpose Center "Vityaz" (604-й Краснознамённый центр специального назначения "Витязь"). The new center inherited the rich history and esteemed lineage of the original Vityaz unit, consolidating the MVD's elite special forces capabilities under a unified command.
With the establishment of the [[National Guard of Russia|National Guard of Russia]] (Rosgvardiya) in 2016, the Internal Troops of the MVD were abolished, and their functions and units, including the 604th Special Purpose Center "Vityaz", were transferred to the newly formed Rosgvardiya. Today, the 604th Special Purpose Center continues to operate as an integral and highly capable counter-terrorism and special operations unit within Russia's internal security framework, maintaining the enduring legacy of the "Vityaz" name.
