Vinces Canton is an administrative subdivision (canton) of Los Ríos Province in the coastal region of Ecuador. Its administrative seat is the town of Vinces.
Overview
Located in the central part of Los Ríos Province, Vinces Canton covers an area of approximately 400 km². According to the 2022 national census, the canton had a population of roughly 70,000 inhabitants, with a demographic composition primarily of mestizo ethnicity. The canton’s economy is based on agriculture, notably rice, banana, cacao, and livestock farming, as well as small‑scale commerce and services centered in the town of Vinces. The region lies within the Guayas River basin, featuring lowland tropical climate with a rainy season from December to May.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Vinces” is derived from the Spanish verb vencer (“to overcome” or “to win”). Historical accounts suggest the name commemorates a local victory during the early 19th‑century conflicts associated with Ecuador’s independence, although the precise event is not definitively documented.
