Vihti Church is a Lutheran place of worship located in the municipality of Vihti, in the Uusimaa region of Finland. It serves as the main church for the Vihti Parish within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.
The current church building was completed in 1772. It was originally designed by the master builder Antti Piimänen as a wooden, cruciform structure. However, the building’s history is marked by several significant fires caused by lightning strikes, most notably in 1818 and 1846. Following the fire of 1846, which destroyed much of the interior and the roof, the church underwent extensive renovations.
The post-1846 reconstruction was based on designs from the office of architect Carl Ludvig Engel. These renovations transitioned the building’s architectural style toward Neoclassicism, which is reflected in its current exterior and interior appearance. The church is a timber-framed structure with a cruciform floor plan. The interior houses an altarpiece painted by Berndt Abraham Godenhjelm in 1846, titled The Resurrection.
Vihti Church replaced a medieval stone church dedicated to Saint Bridget (Pyhän Birgitan kirkko). The ruins of this earlier structure, which dates back to the early 16th century, are located approximately two kilometers from the current church site near the shores of Lake Hiidenvesi. The ruins remain a protected historical site, while the 1772 church continues to serve the local congregation.
