Via Rasella attack

Definition: The Via Rasella attack refers to a partisan ambush carried out by members of the Italian resistance movement on German military personnel in Rome on March 23, 1944.

Overview: The attack occurred in the central Roman district of Via Rasella during the German occupation of Rome in World War II. A unit of the 11th company of the 3rd Battalion of the SS Police Regiment "South Tyrol" was marching through the street when a bomb concealed in a rubbish cart was detonated by Italian partisans. The explosion killed 33 German soldiers and injured several others. The assault was claimed by the Communist-led resistance group Gruppi di Azione Patriottica (GAP), with Bruno Fanciullacci and Carlo Salinari among those reportedly involved in planning it.

In response, Adolf Hitler ordered immediate reprisals. Under the directive of SS officer Herbert Kappler, the Ardeatine Caves massacre (Fosse Ardeatine) was carried out on March 24, 1944. A total of 335 Italian civilians and political prisoners were executed in retaliation, exceeding the ratio of ten Italians for each German soldier killed. The victims included Jews, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens arrested in the preceding days.

The Via Rasella attack and its aftermath remain significant in Italian historical memory, representing both the resistance to Nazi occupation and the brutal reprisals inflicted by German forces.
