Verscio
Verscio was a municipality in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. On 25 October 2009, it merged with the neighboring municipalities of Borgnone and Palagnedra to form the new municipality of Centovalli.
Geography
Verscio is situated in the Centovalli valley, an area renowned for its scenic landscape. The valley extends from Locarno in Switzerland to Domodossola in Italy and is traversed by the Centovalli Railway, a narrow-gauge railway line that serves the various communities along its route. The former municipal territory of Verscio included portions of the valley floor and the surrounding mountainous terrain.
History
The first documented mention of Verscio dates back to 1338, where it was referred to as Verscio. For centuries, it functioned as an independent municipality within the political structure of the Canton of Ticino. The decision to merge in 2009 was part of a broader administrative reform movement in Switzerland aimed at consolidating smaller municipal entities to improve efficiency and governance.
Culture and Notable Features
Verscio is widely recognized for hosting the Accademia Teatro Dimitri, often referred to as the Scuola Dimitri or Dimitri School. This international professional theatre academy was founded in 1975 by the acclaimed Swiss clown and mime artist Dimitri (born Dimitri Jakob Müller). The institution is highly regarded for its specialized training in physical theatre, clowning, and mime, attracting students from diverse international backgrounds. The academy also operates the Teatro Dimitri, a professional theatre space that stages various performances and cultural events throughout the year.
Transportation
The village of Verscio benefits from a station on the Centovalli Railway line. This railway provides essential transportation links, connecting the village to the larger urban center of Locarno and to Domodossola in Italy, as well as facilitating access to other communities located within the Centovalli valley.
