Vernon, Kansas

Vernon was an unincorporated community and post office located in Woodson County, Kansas, United States. Situated approximately 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Yates Center, the county seat, Vernon existed as a small rural settlement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it is considered an extinct town or ghost town, with little to no physical remnants of the original community.

History

The Vernon post office was established on October 19, 1887. For a period, it served as a central point for local farmers and residents, providing postal services and likely a small cluster of homes or businesses. However, as with many small rural communities in Kansas during the era, Vernon experienced a gradual decline. Factors such as shifts in transportation routes (e.g., being bypassed by railroads), agricultural changes, and migration to larger towns contributed to its diminishing population and economic activity. The post office officially discontinued service on September 30, 1904, marking the end of Vernon's formal existence as a recognized community.

Geography

Vernon was located within Woodson County, in the southeastern part of Kansas. Its exact coordinates are not widely documented, but historical records place it northeast of Yates Center. The surrounding area is primarily agricultural.
